Curious, how the very process of waiting is altered depending upon its purpose.

I have sat in a pitch-black room, heart in my mouth, for over three hours, waiting for the appearance of a deadly snake. I have sat on a chest of French gold in a bank vault, awaiting the wicked and clever man who'd planned to steal it, for over two hours.

Neither of those instances agitated and terrified me as does this 30-minute wait for Watson's return to 221b from his club. I have a newly-bought ring I wish to give him, and a query to make.

The longest wait over the shortest time. Lovely!

Einstein described the relativity of time by saying that spending an hour with your arm around a pretty girl was a good deal different from spending an hour sitting on a hot stove.

Decades later, in Sussex, they would say something similar of their life: that they’ve been together for years, but it seems as if the ring and the query were only yesterday.

I love that phrase "in prospect" ^__^

And yes, poor Holmes - the last situation being the most important and ironically the one he has the least control over, even though he believes Watson will say yes.

That's such a charmingly Victorian way of saying "affianced," isn't it?
