And I’m running, or rather marching, late. My apologies.

Thank you so much to [personal profile] mafief for the idea for this activity. She has sent me a graphic which explains how to play a game:

Describe the plot of your favorite book in exactly six words! But don’t say what it is, let us guess.

Naturally I’m going to alter that slightly to ‘describe the plot of one of the canon stories in six words’. Leave your description in the comments and then the rest of us can guess which story you’re referencing!

A couple of examples, one rather in the style of a riddle and the other a little more transparent:

She heats iron. Press your suit!

This is The Solitary Cyclist. Miss Smith (a smith being someone who heats and works with iron) is ‘courted’ (press your suit!) by both Carruthers and Woodley.

Boy loses treasure. Boy gains treasure.

This is of course The Sign of Four!

As always, you needn’t take part in this activity if you don’t wish to. Once you’re a member, you can post what and when you want—as long as you keep to the 500 words or less wordcount and the ACD Holmes ‘verse. AUs, crossovers and fusions are all permitted, as long as the characters remain essentially recognisable as the original ACD versions.

Please see the profile for the full posting guidelines!

For this month’s activity, I have rummaged through the internet and gathered together the titles of some of the canon stories after they had been translated into other languages.

The game is to guess both the language and the story’s original English title. Some titles I think will be easier than others (and I realise some of the players will actually already know some of these languages) but for the more difficult ones I shall add a clue. Please bear in mind too that the translated titles may not be literal translations—you may have to do a bit of lateral thinking—and some of the titles listed may share a language.

Here we go!

1. L’Escarboucle bleue

2. De Afgesneden Ooren This one isn’t a literal translation of the English title but does fit the story well. If I were to mention that ‘ooren’ is a (now old-fashioned) plural for ‘oor’, and that word has some similarity in shape to its English cousin…?

3. Späte Rache

4. Neljän merkit It sounds like we’re at the end of the race, and it looks like we’re down to the final quartet…

5. Y Cylch Brith I’m sure my fellow Britons are probably familiar with the bread ‘bara brith’. Which is dotted with currents…?

6. バスカヴィル家の犬 It might help if I point out the title is written in a mixture of logograms and phonetic symbols. The second to last symbol in the title marks possession, and the other phonetic symbols are the sort that could be used to represent an English proper noun.

7. Das Landhaus in Hampshire Well, someone cut out Watson’s poetry for this title (no, it isn’t RETI) but I think the address is still clear enough to direct you where you need to go.

8. ماجرای خانه خالی A famous Holmesian slipper gets a mention in this story, when Watson is pleased to see it is still in residence after all this time…

9. Su último saludo en el escenario And we reach the end of the game!

The activity for this month:

We have been asked to raise money for the local orphanage through the medium of carol singing and so, from canon, we have to put together a crack team of carol singers.

So pick a singer and explain your choice!

Some examples:

Violet Smith (SOLI) - a music teacher with powerful lungs from all that cycling

The Hound (HOUN) - strong voice that carries over long distances

James Ryder (BLUE) - sings like a canary when confronted with his crime

The activity for this month is:

Family Trees!

That is, putting together a small family tree for any canon character that takes your fancy.

Here’s an example for Mrs. Hudson:

Mrs. Pearce [Occupation: Landlady]

|

Mrs. Dawson [Occupation: Landlady]

|

Mrs. Campbell [Occupation: Landlady]

|

John | Richard | Henry | Mrs. Hudson | Thomas | Robert | Septimus

Additional notes: We can see from this that Mrs. Hudson began her training as Sherlock Holmes' landlady early—coming from a long line of landladies and having six boisterous brothers. (Though she does now look back on her childhood as a time of calm and tranquility in comparison.)

Let your imagination run free, and discover as many obscure and hitherto unknown relatives as you can!

This month’s activity is called:

A Stitch in Time Saves Nine

We are asking you to come up with ideas for actual stitched items that were of great assistance later on.

Some examples:

The local laundry is somewhat surprised to see that Mr. Holmes has started sewing pockets into his underwear. But there is method in his madness. Watson has been using his lockpicks to retrieve his chequebook and after one too many disastrous losses at the races Holmes takes it upon himself to hide the chequebook in one of these secret pockets—this being a 'set of drawers' that Watson is not going to be able to pick.

Mrs. Hudson has never regretted looping together her own rope ladder. But after using it for three rapid escapes from a first floor window and two from a second, she decides it would best if she and the servants slept on the ground floor. So she gifts the ladder to Dr. Watson. And only to Dr. Watson.

A Swiss holiday, May 1891. Holmes may be fatalistic but Watson damn well isn't. He may not have Holmes' ability to guess the likely course of the future but to cover all possibilities he stitches a self-releasing parachute into Holmes' walking jacket, and stitches a label into his shirt stating that: If the wearer should wander he is to be returned to: Dr. J. H. Watson, Kensington, London, England. Thank you so much.

This month’s activity is called:

Work & Play

And the idea behind it is to come up with ideas, in a couple of sentences, about work and play overlapping for our characters.

Some examples:

A locked room murder happens at the Diogenes Club, with the culprit having to be one of the members currently on the premises. Mycroft is finally able to enjoy solving a mystery all on his own without having to expend much energy.

Mrs. Hudson goes on a busman's holiday, helping out at a children's home. After putting up with her tenants, dealing with the behaviour of actual small boys is quite relaxing.

Miss Violet Smith, now Mrs. Cyril Morton and wealthy heiress, invents the first exercise bicycle. Whilst cycling you also power an attached pianola, so you have beautiful piano music as you pedal.

And my esteemed colleague informs me: Aemelia Vole is currently embroidering the Ferret's new waistcoat with stitches which say in Morse code 'No snacks'.

For this month’s activity I have been inspired by an excellent Holmestice fic The Better Part of Valour, in which we see Holmes and Mycroft afresh through Mr. Melas' eyes.

So the activity this month is to describe canon characters. To be more exact:

those characters that are already described thoroughly in canon, describe them from another angle;

those that have very little description, fill in the gaps;

and those who aren’t well described—like Mrs. Hudson—but have gathered a traditional appearance over the years, perhaps start afresh with a new description.

For example, for Mrs. Hudson:

She was a little above average height and though she dressed plainly, always retained a clear air of elegance—as if at any moment she might throw on a cloak and exit for a afternoon tea party. Her hair especially spoke of time and effort spent before the mirror each morning. Watson occasionally caught Holmes making surreptitious notes about Mrs. Hudson’s current choice of impressive coiffure, the detective casually setting his pen aside when his landlady turned that direct and knowing gaze on him.

This month’s activity is strictly-speaking a non-writing one. We’ve had a prompt involving clothing and so we’re going to continue that theme here.

We’d like you to search for images of an outfit or an item of clothing, or hairstyles or moustaches and beards. Images of items that you think would suit various canon characters (or indeed various regular original characters) in different situations and at various times of their life.

When you’ve found something that interests you, give us the link and a short comment about who it’s for and why you think it’s appropriate. And then everyone will be free to write something based on the image if they are so inspired.

A couple of examples to get the ball rolling:

Holmes’ favourite outfit as a toddler. It’s a lovely bright colour to reflect his dynamic personality, and allows great ease of movement for an active, inquisitive child. It’s really quite splendid and Holmes remains puzzled as to why people are so taken aback whenever he wears anything similar in his adult life.

Mrs. Hudson’s cape. A cape is of course far more practical than a coat—so much easier to get on when you’re hurriedly having to evacuate 221 Baker Street yet again. It truly is just perfect for those chilly nights standing on the pavement weeping as the fire brigade play their hoses over the upper windows.

For this month’s activity, we are going to have a communal game of ‘Gin Hudson’!

This is a variation on the well-known game ‘Hangman’. I will pick a phrase from the canon to be guessed and members of the comm should choose letters in the comments—one letter per comment. If they are correct choices, I will naturally add them in. But if they are incorrect choices, Mrs. Hudson will take a glass of gin. If she reaches her seventh glass, then she will retire to bed, no-one gets any supper and the game is over!

The phrase for the first round was: 'The game is afoot' and it was guessed by Okapi.

The phrase for the second round was: 'You have a grand gift of silence, Watson' and was guessed by Mafief.

The phrase for the third round was: 'he had drifted into the habit of winding up every meal by taking out his false teeth and hurling them at his wife' and was guessed by Okapi.

Fourth round!

The phrase is:

I     h a d    _ _ _ _ e d     a _ i d e      _ h e    b a r r e n      _ a _ e r

a n d      _ e a n i n _      b a _ _      i n      _ _      _ h a i r

I     _ e _ _      i n _ _     a      b r _ w n      _ _ _ d _

Let the guessing recommence!

Letters guessed so far:

n, a, b, h, d, i, w, r, e
