“And just where are you going dressed like that?” I realised as soon as I uttered the words I sounded like someone’s Mamma, scandalised by the latest fashions. However, Holmes’ apparel merited the comment; the hat alone was a ridiculous creation guaranteed to draw attention to the wearer.
“You think Mrs Hudson won’t approve?” the afore-mentioned wearer asked.
“I think Mrs Hudson will consider it further proof you have completely lost your senses.”
Holmes gave a bark of laughter. “But tell me, what do you think of my footwear?”
I looked downwards and then said in some surprise, “Good heavens, Holmes. Those boots are hardly suited to the outfit.”
“But I shall need to wear them when I reach my destination. However, if everyone is admiring my beautiful new hat, they are extremely unlikely to consider my feet.”
I made a more careful inspection of Holmes’ outfit. “And I see now you are wearing trousers,” I said, “but they are covered by the generous cut of the skirt.” Holmes nodded and I continued, “And of course it will be easy enough to quickly remove the skirt, but changing into your boots would take too much time.”
Holmes agreed and added, “Besides which, I do not have a bag which both matches my outfit and is large enough to carry my boots.”
