For Dr Watson and Inspector Lestrade the discovery of the broom cupboard was a major transformation.  Not that they hadn’t known of its existence in 221 Baker Street, but the potential it offered them was one they were delighted to have found, for it served their purposes extremely well.  Even if, after a while, they found they were forced to share it.

For Inspector Hopkins the discovery of the broom cupboard provided all sorts of new experiences.  His fledgling relationship with the great Sherlock Holmes took a new, and entirely delightful, turn.  At first he had been a little unsure, but gradually his confidence had increased until the point at which he would sometimes go as far as suggesting they make use of the cupboard.  A suggestion Holmes would always agree with.

For Mrs Hudson the fact that others had discovered her broom cupboard was a source of constant annoyance.  There was the necessity of teaching each new housemaid a few unexpected facts of life, namely how to deal with unwanted life forms discovered inside the cupboard.  Furthermore, when one chooses to sit down and relax with a select glass of something, one does not want to hear strange noises coming from the end of the corridor.  Put simply, a broom cupboard was designed purely for mops, buckets, dusters and brooms.

Maybe a lock would help. Scratch that, it wouldn't help, but maybe it would get the point across from a scandalized housekeeper.

A surprisingly sober look at something that is normally used to such farcical comic effect. But I like it a lot! Long live the broom cupboard!

I suspect that the solution might be for Mrs. Hudson to smile sweetly and tell all four gentlemen that she doesn't mind at all if they make use of the broom cupboard. In fact, she encourages them to use it, whenever they feel like it.

Whereupon it stops being excitingly forbidden, the fun goes out of it and they start using the upper lumber rooms instead ^__^

Lestrade refuses to use the lumber rooms as he designates them a hazard to life and limb. On the other hand, when Holmes and Hopkins use the lumber room it leaves the broom cupboard free for Watson and Lestrade. Mrs Hudson orders extra gin.

Sadly, this leads to an increase in the noise level as the groans etc are accompanied by the sounds of falling buckets.
