Continuing on with our violet theme, for this activity we’d like you to have a go at putting together conversations for the canon characters using only flowers and their associated meanings.

For example:

Mrs. Hudson:

Fleur-de-Luce (Fire).

Birdsfoot Trefoil (Revenge).

Wild Tansy (I declare war against you).

Holmes:

Raspberry (Remorse).

Red Columbine (Anxious and trembling).

Mrs. Hudson:

Jacob's Ladder (Come down).

Coltsfoot (Justice shall be done).

Holmes:

Major Convolvulus (Extinguished hopes).

For your convenience, I will add a link to Kate Greenaway’s Language of Flowers here. But do feel free to use any sources you like.

As always, you needn’t take part in this activity if you don’t wish to. Once you’re a member, you can post what and when you want—as long as you keep to the 500 words or less wordcount and the ACD Holmes ‘verse. AUs, crossovers and fusions are all permitted, as long as the characters remain essentially recognisable as the original ACD versions.

Please see the profile for the full posting guidelines!

I have sat down twice to try to do this. It seems like something I should be able to do, on the face of it. But I can't seem to make anything work. It's all a muddle and not a conversation at all. I'll keep trying. Sorry.

Well, there's two weeks left in the month. I shall have another go in a couple of days. It may end up being a story rather than a conversation. It may be the dialogue element that is catching me up.

Why do you think I set fire to Mrs Hudson's reply?

You could always begin a conversation for someone else to reply.

Thank you. I’m fairly certain this would have been a seasonally unfeasible and rather expensive flower conversation.

::bows:: I didn’t behave myself with the ‘surprise’ part… But oh well. :)

It was certainly a challenge, but fun. Thanks for providing the link to the Language of the Flowers book, it’s a neat resource.

Oh! Did you see the spleen one? Why the frick would victorians want to send spleen? Is there some British joke I’m totally missing? Spleen must be used because it’s so random!

BBC Sherlock
Persimon - Bury me amid Nature's beauties
Fumitory – Spleen[s]

That’s about as far as I’ve gotten with using it. It reminds me more of BBC Sherlock though…

You're welcome. You've inspired me to try to have another go at it.

Spleen in this case means irritation or bad temper. Like spite. Which is a lot like BBC Sherlock. But just a reminder that this is an ACD comm...

Yahoo! You can do it. :)

Lol, oh goodness, I am so off! Thought of the organ and had no idea there was another meaning to it. Neat! I wonder if other organs have other meanings like spleen...

Buuuuutttt... What if I'm doing a body swap crossover and BBC Sherlock interacts with ACD Watson? 0:-) OK, ok, I'll be good. :)

As [livejournal.com profile] okapi1895 says, spleen stands for anger. It's found in the phrase 'vent my spleen' and is because doctors used to think anger came from the spleen.

I've never heard of that idiom before. Neat!
Lol, it makes even less sense the more I think about it. Why are spleens angry? Might need to turn off logic now.

And guts aren’t really the source of instinct. But spleens? Do most people know where that organs even located in the body?

I suspect the medieval mind wasn't too concerned where in the body the spleen was, so long as it stayed there.

I do like the image of Holmes and Watson conversing with flowers, whilst Stamford looks on, a bit like watching a tennis match with blooms.

Yes! I wanted to have a go at this before I switch to the poetry page activity. It works, I think, but I had to add punctuation and stage cues. I may try to do something in prose with this because it was too much work to just use once. We must be Victorian in our economy, no?
