“I still do not see, Holmes, why you insist on refraining from using your magic to solve at least the most basic cases, such as this! Why, with your wand, in only a few seconds, you’ll know exactly who the perpetrator was and he can be brought to justice and -- “

Holmes’ voice is very quiet and calm as he interrupts his companion. “She.”

“Pardon?”

“The perpetrator is a she, if I am not mistaken.”

“Holmes, I have never known you to be mistaken about any detail in a case, especially one as minor as this. That is why I do not know why -- ”

“Magic can always be taken from us, Watson, but if one retains one’s focus and mental capabilities in the finest order and relies on them foremost in all cases, one shall never want much for magic even if one loses one’s magical capabilities. However, now that I believe I have accurately deduced the identity of the perpetrator, I would be amiss to not employ my wand to confirm the accuracy of my theory.”

“And what exactly is your theory, Holmes?” Watson asks, watching as Sherlock brings out his wand made from the very finest calabash wood.

“The maid disrupted the Elves before they could make the shoes for our cobbler friend,” Holmes explains, waving his wand methodically through the air. “Out of jealousy, she had already devoured their milk and cookies and set about turning the shop a shambles. The Elves, not knowing what to make of her actions, hid themselves and are likely still within this very room, simply hidden from mortal view.”

“So . . . what does he need to do to bring them back?”

“They are already here, Watson.”

“I understand that, Holmes, but what is needed to persuade them it is safe to exit their concealment?”

“Why that, my dear Watson, is elementary. They seek only an apology and acknowledgement.”

“So we have to find the maid . . . “

“Perish the thought!” Holmes declares with a wave of his wand. “They seek the cobbler’s apology for thinking they could ever cause him harm after all they have done to assist him and his family.”

“Oh.”

Watson’s face falls just as Holmes lowers his wand with an accomplished, “Ah ha!”

“You found something else?” he asks expectantly.

“No. I merely ascertained that my deductions are indeed accurate. Now you may go fetch Mister Schneiderin, have him make his apology to the Elves posthaste, and be on your way.”

“And you, Holmes?” Watson queries, puzzled as to why he is suddenly laden with the task of telling the shopkeeper that everything shall be resolved with a mere apology. “Where will you be in all of this?”

“I, dear Watson,” Holmes replies, slipping back into his jacket, “shall already be on my way. As you yourself previously indicated, there are many other, more dire cases needing my attention than the shoemaker and his Elves.”

“Yes, yes, of course, Holmes,” Watson murmurs, shaking his head at what his life has become.

A very clever take on the story - I do like Holmes becoming involved with the shoemaker and the elves.

“Magic can always be taken from us, Watson, but if one retains one’s focus and mental capabilities in the finest order and relies on them foremost in all cases, one shall never want much for magic even if one loses one’s magical capabilities..." I liked that a lot ^__^ And what an interesting crossover to choose to do.

It's lovely to see you posting here, btw - I've created you an author's tag and added it to your fic ^_^
