Author’s Notes: Holmes and Watson are invited to pick blackberries.
A family from the village, by the name of Roberts, had called in at our cottage on their way to pick blackberries on a nearby track. Mrs Roberts asked whether we would like to accompany them, and Holmes and I were glad to accept, with an invitation of our own for them to drink tea with us afterwards.
It was a happy band of us that set out for the selected spot. Holmes and I were both carrying our canes, although his was primarily to be used for hooking down high brambles. I knew that we were both looking forward the fruit picking, but I also knew that it was likely to turn into a tasting session for him. Whilst we walked, I took the opportunity to have a talk with him.
“I feel I should remind you that the purpose of blackberrying is to bring the blackberries home,” I said.
“I am aware of that, dear boy,” he replied. I could discern a spark of mischief in his eyes.
“What I mean to say, Holmes, is that you will surely enjoy eating them more if you wait until they are baked into pies and puddings or turned into jam.”
He laughed. “You are right, of course, Watson. All the same, I am not sure I shall be able to resist tasting one or two.”
I gave a sigh which was supposed to sound admonishing but came out fond instead. I did not mind really, and he knew it.
