The diamond jubilee of our gracious majesty, Queen Victoria, has been a wonderful celebration. Everywhere there have been flags on display and I have even brought a small royal standard home for our mantelpiece in honour of the occasion. Even Holmes seems to be swept up in the enthusiasm and Mrs Hudson has made a point of telling him she will not appreciate his shooting the initials VR into the wall again. His query as to whether a 60 would be acceptable instead, although I hope was not serious, was met with a glare designed to turn men to stone.
