Title: Unlikely Account
Form/Word Count: 180
Characters/Pairing: Dr Watson
Rating: G
Warning/Content: Retirement era. The excuses for the poor performance of the village football are not believed.
The village football team had suffered defeat at the feet of a far inferior (or so I was led to believe) team from a neighbouring village. We were in the Red Lion when two of the players began their account of the match. The excuses were poor, and the expressions of my drinking companions implied that they were unacceptable in their day, and the years hadn’t improved their plausibility. The sad death of a much-loved grandmother featured greatly, although since the funeral had been on the Monday, and no-one had had a good word to say about her, this seemed unlikely.

They were just bringing their sorry account to an end, when Tom Hill remarked, “And I suppose this has nothing to do with over half the team celebrating a win on the races last night?”
“Oh, certainly not, Mr Hill. We’d never do anything like that.”
The protestations of innocence were somewhat ruined by the landlord’s distant snort and his comment that it had taken him and Ted, the barman, ten minutes to get them outside at closing time.
