Warning/Content: Mrs Hudson has rendered her monthly account
"Mrs Hudson has rendered her latest account,” I remarked to Holmes as I opened the envelope which had been left prominently on the table.
“And what interesting additions has she found for us this time?” Holmes asked.
I perused the regular items: rent, meals eaten and meals missed, laundry, three bottles of gin, and then said, “Are you ready?”
He nodded.
“One potted petunia.”
“Squashed when I dropped my umbrella on it.”
“One black umbrella, ladies.”
“Correction, Mrs Hudson’s umbrella.”
“Two cushions. I knew about the first one, which you used for demonstration purposes, but the second?”
“I knocked over a bottle of ink. It was the first thing to come to hand.”
“Four tea plates. Four of them? That’s a bit much, even for Mrs Hudson.”
“All four at once. I startled Esme, who dropped them.”
“Esme is normally fairly sensible. I can’t see her dropping four tea plates.”
“When I say startled, I jumped down the stairs just as she was coming out of the kitchen and knocked them out of her hands.”
“Why were you jumping down the stairs?”
“I was demonstrating to Lestrade a jaguar leaping down on its prey from a tree branch.”
“Of course, only instead of prey you went for tea plates. Well, all things considered, this month you haven’t got off too badly.”
