"What," Missus Hudson asked bluntly, eyeing the offering before her, "is that?"
"I... That is..." Doctor Watson's mustache twitched as his fingers curled around the gift he had spent the last few weeks working on in secret. "It is a bonnet. Do you not care for it?"
She gently pried it from his tightened fingers and tested it atop her head. Surprisingly, although the bonnet itself looked quite garrish, it was a perfect fit! "I shall wear it tomorrow evening," she announced.
"Tomorrow evening?" The good doctor brightened. "Is it to be a special occasion?"
"Yes, we shall begin your lessons then."
"My lessons?" he asked in surprise. "For what manner?"
"Why, for sewing of course! Sewing clothing is quite different from sewing up wounds, Doctor Watson, but no matter! I shall teach you all I know!" Her smile faltered, however, when she noticed his hesitation. "I believe the occasion will definitely call for a hot pot of tea, and I do believe I have some cookies leftover somewhere."
Like all young boys, the doctor brightened again then, the rosy color returning to his cheeks. He smiled beneath his mustache. "I shall look forward to it, Missus Hudson."
"As will I," she said, glancing again, as he turned away, to the bonnet she held in her hands. The stitches were deft, but the colors and pattern he'd chosen left a lot to be desired. No matter. It gave her a new opening to the man, and as soon as she had taught him to sew a new and better bonnet, this one could disappear inside her chest of drawers, nestled in amongst other hidden fabrics that reminded her of her favorite men. It was an odd blessing truly, but he and Mister Holmes had become the sons she'd never had.
