Title: A Perfect Fit
Wordcount: 355
Characters/Pairings: Holmes/Watson
Rating: G
Author’s Notes: January brings cold weather to the Sussex cottage.
Although December had been rather unremarkable, the weather in January rather decidedly took a turn for the cold. Indeed, Holmes and I found ourselves having to shovel snow in the garden and away from the front path on more than one occasion. We were most fortunate to have an excellent range in our kitchen and a woodburning stove in our sitting room, so that we could keep the downstairs portion of the cottage warm. The upper floor, however, was cold, and we got into the habit of brushing our teeth very quickly in the morning or evening, before scurrying either towards the heat of downstairs or to our bed.
Holmes becomes cold more easily than I. Although he has gained some extra pounds since retiring, he is still not over well-endowed with natural insulation. Whenever he ventured out on those cold days, he would don many layers and the additional protection of a scarf and hat. He would then swathe himself in a blanket before the fire when he got back inside, sipping tea or hot cocoa until the warmth came back to his old bones.
I noted that he did not posses many thick jumpers, and, as I have some skill with needles, I set to knitting him one. I had obtained, some while before, some chunky wool from a shop in the village, in a pleasing shade of red. It knitted up quickly, and I soon had the jumper finished. Holmes had evidently assumed that I was making the garment for myself, for he was surprised when I held it out to him.
“I made it for you, dear boy,” I said.
“You did not have to, Watson,” he replied, taking the jumper from me and stroking it with his fingers. I could see that he was touched by the gesture.
“I would not have you getting cold when I have the ability to provide so simple a solution.”
He twitched a small smile. “Thank you, my dear. That is very kind of you.”
He shed the jumper he had been wearing and pulled on the new one. It fit him to perfection.
