Sherlock Holmes is the reason many people come to our door, of course. But he is not the only reason we receive a steady stream of visitors.
A good number of callers are patients looking for the doctor – some from my usual practise, but also others who shared word as with the railway engineer who brought me the poor thumbless Victor Hatherley. And I could never turn down an Irregular showing up on our doorstep with a festering wound or a rotten tooth rather than a lead for my friend.
Other landladies on the street call on Mrs. Hudson, ostensibly for a cup of tea in her own rooms but often to request advice on how to deal with obstreperous tenants or indolent servants. The good woman lends her expertise without a murmur; she is the absolute monarch of her tiny fiefdom and aids her neighbours as surely as she would lead her army to their defence were this truly her castle. Further, while our landlady’s cooking is adequate her baking is superb; the timely offer of a splendid crumpet or scone has gained police cooperation or a talkative visitor when entreaties fail.
Even our servants are a cut above many of their fellows, as their regular duties can include physically repelling an intruder as well as thoroughly dusting a room without dislodging a single paper. Mrs. Hudson sometimes lends out our maids or boots to other households; a glowing review from their temporary employers leads to a rise in their wages at 221, servants talk to each other, and soon we have so many applying to be servants here that we may employ only the most skilled and able.
Ours is the place one comes to seek justice when the police laugh you out of the station, have a headache soothed, get a dangling button or broken bootlace mended, borrow kitchen help for a party, or have a good cup of tea and the best currant scones outside of Scotland.
Mr. Sherlock Holmes may be master of the craft of scientific deduction, but he is not the sole master in the most skilled crafter’s hall on Baker Street.
