Title: Mokara Orchid
Rating: Gen
Length: 221b
Summary: Watson and Holmes recover a rare red orchid.
“So this is what all the fuss has been about,” I said as I crossed my arms over my chest and peered down intently.
It was a flower of a brilliant, festive shade made of successively larger five-pointed petals stars nested atop one another.
“The blood mokara orchid,” said Holmes. “Aptly named not just for its red colour but also for the amount of blood shed over it.”
“Let’s see. One lost his sanity, one lost his fortune, two lost their freedom, and one lost his very life, and all for this. It is beautiful but…”
“And rare.”
I sighed. “...but it’s just a flower, Holmes.”
“We shouldn’t judge too harshly, Watson. Obsession would be a much more common affliction if more had the time and means to indulge in it.”
I made a noise. “I suppose you’re right. After all, we have seen similar destructive trajectories with ‘just bits of shiny rock.’ If gems can provoke murder, madness, and mayhem, why not flowers? And the judges said what about this specimen?”
“They said it had ‘perfect balance, recognition without delusions of grandeur.’”
I snorted, then exclaimed with mock outrage, “Orchids with delusions of grandeur are the worst!”
Holmes chuckled. “Indeed, and I’d observe that balance was sorely lacking in this flower’s pursuers, and delusions?”
I nodded. “Delusions have been bountiful.”
