Warning/Content: The return from Edinburgh. A follow up to Edinburgh
I had a most agreeable few days in Scotland. Holmes had continued to be involved in the case, although once the ringleaders were arrested and he was satisfied he had provided sufficient evidence to the local police, he quickly lost interest. I had indeed been able to visit some old friends and take time wandering around some of my old haunts. Nevertheless, I was not sorry when it was time to return home.
When we reached the train, Holmes got on board first. I then passed him my medical bag, before alighting myself.
He returned the bag to me and said, “Your bag seems somewhat heavier than when we came north.”
“Yes,” I agreed, “I’m not surprised.” I waited until we had found our seats before explaining. “In here there is a tin of shortbread for Mrs Hudson. I know she makes her own, but I also know she has a particular fondness for genuine Scottish shortbread, so I thought she would appreciate the present.”
Holmes inclined his head. I presumed he agreed with the sentiment, even though it would never have occurred to him.
“And,” I continued, opening the bag, and removing the second item, “I bought a bottle of whisky. I don’t suppose you’d want a nip.”
He smiled and held out his hand, so I passed the bottle over. He took a drink and returned it to me to drink in my turn.
“To Scotland!” he said, as the train started to draw out of the station.
