Author’s Notes: A tiny little fluff drabble for the January prompt (right under the wire!).

It wasn't terribly expensive, I told myself for the third time while paying the clerk behind the desk. And it wouldn't go to waste. It was a gift, too, and Holmes had relinquished his hold on my purse many years ago, so I could spend my savings how I wished.

It was for our anniversary, I told myself. I wanted to get him gold foil for his scrapbook projects. A nice little surprise, just a little splurge. We'd been thrifty long enough, I thought. He deserved something fancy.

The ride home was smooth as always, the scenery refreshingly calm. I held the little package safe in my coat pocket, patting it with an absent smile to my face. I liked to imagine Holmes's face when he opened it. Being sentimental again old fool, he'd say, or, John! Whatever for! With a friendly slap to my arm and a sharp smile to his face. I looked forward to it.

I cursed myself once more. Watson would be returning any minute now, and the muffins I had seemingly timed perfectly were still in the oven, refusing to finish baking. There was no way I had left out an ingredient — impossible! The plan was falling apart; Watson would not come home to a plate of beautifully baked, golden-foil wrapped lemon muffins made especially for our anniversary, which he no doubt believed I had forgotten. Nonsense. I would never forget so important a date in my life as the day I met John Watson.

“Holmes, would you please calm down.”

“They’re burnt!”

“They’re still edible, darling.”

“But your gift was perfect, and mine—”

A gentle kiss. “Also perfect. Happy anniversary, Sherlock Holmes.”

“Hmm. And to you, John Watson.”
