“I do not see what Lestrade has to complain about,” Holmes remarked.  “His bank robbers were foiled in the very act of removing the gold consignment.”

“I don’t think that was the cause of Lestrade’s complaint,” I replied.

“And he will have ample proof of their guilt, since they were caught,” Holmes permitted himself a smile, “red-handed.”

“Indeed,” I agreed.  “But the dye had covered a greater area than intended, and the culprits weren’t the only ones to be marked.  Unfortunately, a number of Lestrade’s men also looked as though they had taken part in a massacre.”

“A minor detail.”

That last line got a chuckle out of me! I love the dry humor of the piece; I can so clearly hear Holmes's dismissal and Watson's long-suffering patience. Thanks for sharing!

I do have to wonder how Holmes would have felt about the collateral damage if one of the disgruntled Yarders had decided to smear him with it on the way out, haha.
