“Mrs Hudson,” Bessie called out. “There’s a snowman at the front door. Should I let him in?”

“Certainly not!” Mrs Hudson called down the stairs. “This is a respectable establishment.”

“What about the carol singers?”

“Are they sober?”

“I don’t think so. They don’t seem to know the right words.”

“Mrs Hudson.” Holmes’ voice was plaintive. “I can assure you that I, at least, am perfectly sober. I merely had a slight accident with a snowdrift.”

The two carol singers provided their musical accompaniment:
Jingle Bells, Jingle Bells, Jingle all the way
Oh what fun it is to ride in a taxicab all day
Dashing through the snow
Chasing after clues
That snowdrift is far too big
And now he’s lost his shoes
Oh…

Mrs Hudson descended the stairs, a broom in one hand, the poker in the other. “Thank you, Bessie, I will take over for now. Could you go and put the kettle on. We shall be needing some tea.”

Mrs Hudson then regaled the three men with one of her frostiest glares. “Remove and shake out your outer garments and your boots.” Holmes looked forlornly at his feet and Mrs Hudson proceeded to sweep the snow off them with her broom. “Now ascend to your rooms in single file without a single word.”

They did as instructed. As they reached 221B Mrs Hudson began to sing:
Jingle Bells, Jingle Bells, Jingle all the way
What a trial it is to sweep the snow up everyday
Dashing through the snow
Fetching yet more gin
I have many tales to tell
Where shall I begin
