Title: Return to Calm
Form/Wordcount: 287
Characters/Pairings: Holmes/Watson
Rating: G
Author’s Notes: Holmes and Watson finish their preparations for Christmas in their little cottage.
In the sitting room of their Sussex cottage, the retired detective lit the candles upon the Christmas tree. Sitting on the sofa to wait for his doctor, he smiled to himself. After the annual dash of preparations for the festivities, it was pleasant to sit and relax. The flickering light of the candles cast shadows upon the walls, adding to the peaceful atmosphere. From the coffee table, he took up a book and began to read.
After a few minutes, the click of the garden gate heralded the doctor’s approach. He came through the front door, laden with bags from trip into Fulworth.
Knowing that his love would want to stow the bags away before doing anything else, the detective said, “Would you like some tea, my dear?”
“That would be perfect,” the doctor replied. “I shall just be a moment.”
While his doctor went upstairs to hide his purchases, the detective went into the kitchen to put the kettle on the hob. By the time his lover joined him in the kitchen, the tea was brewing.
“Did you have a pleasant afternoon, John?” the detective asked when they had kissed each other in greeting.
“Very nice, thank you,” the doctor replied. “But I am glad to have finished all my shopping now. We can have a few days of relaxation before Christmas Day arrives.”
The detective smiled softly. “Indeed, dearest. And, if I might be permitted a little sentimentality, spending time with you is the best part of Christmas.”
The doctor chuckled fondly. He took both of the detective’s hands in his, caressing the backs with his thumbs. “I quite agree, my love.”
After another gentle kiss, the repaired to the sitting room with their tea.
