We both managed not to smile until Holmes’ latest client had departed, but as soon as we were sure he was striding up Baker Street we burst out laughing.

“Can you imagine Mrs Hudson’s face if she had heard him declaring the only way to cook eggs was to use a sterling silver egg coddler?” I said.

“She would probably have hit him over the head with the saucepan she uses,” Holmes agreed.  “And I rather imagine the bargain he has struck with his son-in-law will turn out to be silver-plated and he’s paid about twice what it was worth.”

“You don’t think the son-in-law is involved in anything illegal then?”

“I think it unlikely.  However, after lunch I shall call on the daughter and make some discrete enquiries.”

When Holmes returned later that afternoon he seemed in an excellent mood.  “The daughter was happy to confirm her husband, who is a busy young lawyer and not otherwise engaged in criminal activities, had agreed with her that if the father wished to offer a high price for the egg coddler, then they would accept it.  The lady recently had her first child and the father had refused to make any financial contribution towards the baby, so neither of them was inclined to reject the money.”

“Another case of the biter bit!”
