Title: The Perfect Eggs
Wordcount: 314
Characters/Pairings: Holmes/Watson
Rating: PG
Author’s Notes: Watson cooks a perfect breakfast for Holmes.
Watson often remarks that since retiring I eat more regularly and more heartily. He takes great pleasure in showing me how much he appreciates the change this has wrought in my figure, just as I appreciate how much further he has softened. Sometimes, we remain in our bed late into the morning, savouring the intimacy of skin-to-skin contact.
One Saturday, we had been doing just that. Watson was caressing my belly with his fingertips when my stomach gave a loud rumble.
“Are you hungry, my love?” he asked with a laugh.
I laughed too. “Just a little, darling.”
He gave me a brief, soft kiss before rolling away to get out of bed. “Then I shall go and make us some breakfast,” he said. “What would you like?”
“Could I have boiled eggs, please?” I requested. “You always make them so well.”
“Of course, sweetheart.”
I watched as he moved across the room and slipped on his dressing gown. I promised that I would join him in a few minutes, and he left. I lay there for a few more moments, listening to my beloved moving around. Then I too got out of bed and went to wash my face in the bathroom. When I was done, I followed him downstairs. He was standing at the Aga when I reached the kitchen, carefully boiling the eggs. I sometimes like to wrap myself around him from behind whilst he is cooking, but on that day, I found I preferred to sit and watch him work. It was a strangely graceful process, everything perfectly timed. He buttered the toast, cut it into soldiers, then served the eggs. When he put our plates on the table, I poured our coffee.
He gave me a soft smile across the table as I began to eat. “How is it?” he asked.
I smiled back. “Perfect as always, my darling.”
