Holmes and Watson were strolling in the park.
“Look, Holmes!” Watson gestured ahead of them. “It’s those gentlemen again, Mr. Bantock and Mr. Ludlow. How many times have we encountered them now?”
Holmes smiled. “Seven or eight perhaps?”
“You know... I've begun to wonder about them. To apply your methods.” Watson looked thoughtful. “I mean, they are dressed as gentlemen but their hands indicate physical work. And the way they speak to each other… A certain sense of exasperation from the older and a cheeky deference from the younger? Friends but maybe also employer and employee?”
“Former employer and employee.”
Holmes nodded.
“It’s Mrs. Hudson and Mrs. Turner.”
Watson’s eyebrows shot up. “No! How long have you known?”
“Since our second meeting with them.”
Watson stared at the approaching couple.
“Astounding, Holmes! Mrs. Turner’s moustache seems so natural to me and there is absolutely no sign of Mrs. Hudson’s ample…”
Watson waved a hand vaguely in front of his chest.
Holmes tutted. “Their outfits are perfect. I would never have deduced it from their appearance alone.” He grinned. “What gave it away was that those gentlemen are having far too much fun.”
Holmes raised his hat and called over.
“Mr. Bantock! Mr. Ludlow! Good morning!”
He elbowed Watson discreetly in the ribs.
“Dear fellow, do stop staring at Mr. Bantock’s bosom.”
