Early July 1916

My Dear Holmes,

Just a few words in response to your latest letter, which has finally caught up with me.

It is July once more, and I have been thinking of the days when we woke to the dawn chorus, heard birdsong all day long, and at night there was the sound of the owl and the nightingale.

And today I remembered that strange case involving Mr Grant Munro, which led me to recall how well received your Bohemian role had been.  And how we had discussed the case over the breakfast marmalade – do you remember Mrs Hudson commenting on how many orange pips there had been, when she made it?

By the way, I am still of the same opinion I expressed shortly before we met Miss Cushing.

Yours

J H Watson

Title: Reduce, Reuse, RecycleAuthor: gardnerhill

Form/Wordcount: Drabble (100 words)Characters/Pairings: Mrs. Hudson Rating: GWarnings/Content: None.

Summary: Mrs. Hudson was ahead of her time. Author’s Notes: For the Holmes Minor May 2018 prompt: Ne'er cast a clout till May be out (clothing)

***

Must be spring – the ragmen are about again, calling. Doors open as slaveys and sculleries emerge with armloads of tattered cloth, old bones and bottles.

They don’t call at 221 – but not out of fear of Mr. Holmes.

If Billy or Bridget don’t take the bones home to make soup for their own families, they wind up on Mr. Holmes’ chemistry table. Bottles, the same, or become medicine dispensers. Clean white rags make bandages for the Doctor’s bag; clean coloured rags get sewn into quilts or stuffed into dollies for the Irregulars’ little sisters.

Ragmen? We’ve nought to give them.

This month’s prompt is:

Ne'er cast a clout till May be out

‘Clout’ being clothes! Perhaps Holmes has a new disguise—or someone else is in disguise for once. Perhaps someone has to repair an item of clothing. Perhaps there is an embarrassing encounter at the local corset boutique when there is a double booking for a fitting and one party happens to be the landlady of the other party.

As always, you needn’t use this prompt if you don’t wish to. Once you’re a member, you can post what and when you want—as long as you keep to the 500 words or less wordcount and the ACD Holmes ‘verse. AUs, crossovers and fusions are all permitted, as long as the characters remain essentially recognisable as the original ACD versions.
