Welcome, everyone, once more!

Now, I must admit I am still feeling a little hesitant about travelling too far from home but I am beginning to dream of being “on the bummel” again! To that end, I have retired my faithful old carpet bag and bought one of those new-fangled suit-cases. They are mainly designed for a gentleman’s suits naturally, hence the name. However, I have managed to procure a lightweight version, aimed at the discerning lady—

Yes, Mrs. Frankles?

No, suit-cases haven’t been around for decades and decades.

I can assure you they are a recent invention.

Look, is this the digital watch business all over again? I can arrange for you to speak to Mr. Camkin at the luggage-maker’s down by the river, if you like. He’s been in trunks for over twenty years!

No, he’s never mentioned being chilly. I… don’t quite understand your sense of humour at times, Mrs. Frankles.

Anyway… moving along! I hope my new purchase might inspire your poetry.

And as added inspiration here is a quotation from Dr. Watson’s story, “The Hound of the Baskervilles”:

Sir Henry was more pleased than surprised to see Sherlock Holmes, for he had for some days been expecting that recent events would bring him down from London. He did raise his eyebrows, however, when he found that my friend had neither any luggage nor any explanations for its absence.

Here as usual is the list of poetry forms:

221B verselet, abecedarian poetry, acrostic poetry, alexandrine, ballad, barzelletta, beeswing, blackout poetry, blitz poem, blues stanza, bref double, Burns stanza, call and response, chastushka, cherita, cinquain, circular poetry, clerihew, clogyrnach, colour poems, compound word verse, concrete poetry, Cornish verse, curtal sonnet, débat, décima, descort, diamante, doggerel, double dactyl, echo verse, ekphrasis, elegiac couplet, elegiac stanza, elfje, englyn, enuig, epigram, epistle, epitaph, epulaeryu, Etheree, fable, Fib, florette, found poetry, free verse, ghazal, haiku, hay(na)ku, In Memoriam stanza, Italian sonnet, jueju, kennings poem, lanturne, lies, limerick, line messaging, list poem, lyric poetry, mathnawī, micropoetry, mini-monoverse, musette, nonsense verse, palindrome poetry, pantoum, Parallelismus Membrorum, poem cycle, puente, quatern, quintilla, renga, rhyming alliterisen, riddle, rimas dissolutas, rime couée, rispetto, Schüttelreim, sedoka, septet, sestina, shadorma, sonnet, stream of consciousness, tanka, tercet, terza rima, tongue twister poetry, triangular triplet, tricube, trine, triolet, Tyburn, villanelle, xenolith

And so, let’s get started. We have a lot to… “pack in”!

(That was unkind, Mrs. Frankles. Just because I didn’t understand your joke…)

When leaving a room in a hurry
It all becomes rather a race
Grabbing one's possessions quite swiftly
Jamming them in the suitcase
We'll leave half the items behind us
Taking only the things which we need
Gin bottles are first on the list when
Departing the room at full speed

Wrap the bottles with care, Mrs. H. We don't want spillage!

Certainly not, that would be a waste. The essential items of clothing are used to wrap the bottles - which might explain why Mrs Frankles' blouse has a rather distinctive smell.

I just want to express my appreciation for these posts. I am months behind, but the spirit is willing. I have a couple of limericks and I want to do some clock ones, too, and now suitcases. All good stuff. Thank you.

The Portmanteau Sonnet

In 1896, a certain sleuth
and sleuth’s right hand were hunting clews at dawn.
Their breaking fast was lost to tracking truth,
on went the morn, displays of wits and brawn.

Not yet mid-day but energies expired,
a pause was due, a station picked as site
at which to find the droll repast required,
at which to slake their thirst and have a bite.

A Sunday meal for Saturday strivers.
A blend of morsels, savory and sweet.
Perched on luggage freight, they sipped revivers,
and tucked away the rations, quick and neat.

They sat on trunks. They watched trains come and go.
They brunched atop the modern portmanteau.

Great sonnet - and the final line is perfect!

Thank you! I am afraid it's been too long since I wrote any verse. I am glad I managed it.

Thank you! The puns and word play seem especially strong these days! I was happy to learn that brunch was first used in 1895/1896. Most of the other portmanteau are very modern. And brunch is really the perfect meal, in my opinion, so it was nice thing to consider.

A murderer's lament (sonnet)

This modern gear for the travelling set
is said to be the last word in ‘refined.’
‘Suit-cases’ are expedient and yet
they appear to have left my lot behind.

Though just the thing for pilgrims touring light,
these boxes’ skeletons prove far too frail,
their shallow cavities are far too tight
for my own freight consigned by boat and rail.

A handle’s opportune, no one can deny,
for luggage-toting under one’s own steam,
but when a cargo needs a porter spry
or left-bags clerk, another reigns supreme.

The trunk! The trunk will never be replaced!
A corpse cannot be easily suitcased.

So frustrating for the poor murderer! So embarrassing when the clasp breaks and the contents fall out.

They don't make body-hiding equipment like they used to! *lament*

Thank you! I was really struck by the idea of murderer's lamenting the modern trends in luggage for the purposes of hiding bodies and their parts (as you can tell). It seemed a fun (and gruesome) interpretation of the prompt, which is a very good one.

Let’s pen a requiem to the hatbox,
for such a case is now a dying breed.
Prevailing trends allow for bare, flat locks
and softer crowns. The new girl has no need.

Young ladies who like to seem informed
on latest styles and all that’s marked smart-bred
will find their luggage choices much reformed,
but dash it all, a lass must keep her head!

She cannot wait for early spinsterhood
for leave to lug so old fashioned a tin.
Fruits of decapitation are a good
that want a round, deep case to haul them in.

Thus, miss must turn mademoiselle; her piece
must cross, Dover to Calais, in a valise!

Fashion really has no thought for the needs of the murderer!
