Warning/Content: Holmes admits he can't do everything by himself
“The notion that I solve cases without help is completely inaccurate,” Holmes remarked one morning.
I looked up to see he had been reading an article in one of our more sensational publications.
“While I can indeed solve a case when I am in receipt of all the facts,” he continued, “I am dependent on others to provide me with information.”
“Do explain further, Holmes,” I said with a smile. Although I was aware Holmes appreciated help, it was rare for him to acknowledge the fact.
“You, for instance, doctor, provide much medical insight, which I would otherwise have to spend time looking through medical journals to obtain.”
I wasn’t certain how grateful to be, given that my abilities apparently only saved him time.
“The irregulars are able to follow certain suspects far easier than I, and more than one at a time; an achievement which is certainly beyond my means. The telegraph system provides information it would take me days, if not weeks, to obtain, had I to find it out myself.”
At that point Lestrade arrived.
I greeted him by saying, “Holmes is showing his appreciation for help he has received because it saves him time.”
“You must agree time can be of the essence,” Holmes replied.
“And is that all, Mr Holmes?” Lestrade asked.
“No. There is also the great benefit of companionship, which, although I could manage without it, I have to admit I do enjoy.”
