“A puzzle for you, Watson,” Holmes remarked when the doctor joined him for breakfast one sunny morning.  “There is a footprint in the middle of the butter.  How will you establish who is the guilty party?”

“I could measure the length and breadth of the footprint and compare it with the size of the paws belonging to the various members of this household, eliminating those which are too big or too small.  Or…”

“Or?” Holmes prompted.

“I could look round and observe the party currently licking his paw and trying to pretend that he has been nowhere near the butter.”
