“Good afternoon, Quasimodo,” I said cheerfully to Holmes, when coming into our rooms and discovering him walking around almost bent double.
“What?” he groaned.
“You remember, the bell ringer from Victor Hugo’s Notre Dame de Paris. ‘The bells, the bells!’ I assumed you were practising for a disguise.”
“No,” Holmes grumbled. “I fear I have a slight touch of lumbago.”
I would have offered my assistance, but at that moment Mrs Hudson arrived with a tea tray.
“Ah,” she said, “I see Quasimodo isn’t feeling any better yet. Never mind, Mr Holmes, if you need anything just ring the bell.”
