Title: In Flanders Fields
Form/Word Count: 100
Characters/Pairing: Dr John Watson

Warning/Content: WWI (Watson doesn't die)

“It’s never easy, is it?” I said to my companion.

The Canadian doctor shook his head.  “No, particularly when it’s a good friend.”

“There are times when I’m grateful most of my friends are still back home.”

“Rather than lying in Flanders Fields.”

He sighed and we looked across at the poppies which were flowering.  High above us I could just make out a skylark singing in between the burst of gunfire.

“Back to work,” I said.

***

I remembered that occasion when, some two years later, I heard of the doctor’s death; killed not by gun or mortar but pneumonia.

The piper will call us, one way or another, and we all must dance.

High above us I could just make out a skylark singing in between the burst of gunfire. I was particularly impressed by that line. And the poignancy of the doctor's death - war has so many ways to take life.
