Title: Saturday's Toast
Rating: Teen for suggestive language
Length: 500
Pairing: Watson/Holmes
Notes: for the June prompt. This makes a whole week's set using the Royal British Navy's toast of the day.
Summary: Captain Basil has a chat with the barman and a rendezvous with a comely lass.
“I don’t blame you. If I had someone as fine as you describe waiting on me back home, I’d be anxious to be on my way, too. Another pint of bitters, sir?”
“No, thank you, I’m expecting company shortly, but I will take a shot of your best rum if you’ll do me the honour of joining me, uh, Lieutenant?”
The barman chuckled and set up two small glasses and poured. “It was Sub-Lieutenant once but now it’s just Fox.”
“The Navy’s loss, Fox.”
“I don’t think they see it that way. How did you know?”
“The tattoo on your forearm is suggestive. Supposed your age by your appearance and factored in your likely career based on how long you said you’ve been running this place. The photos on the back wall are also indicative. Put it all together.” I shrugged.
“Huh, well, when you explain it, it doesn’t seem so magical, does it?”
“So I’ve been told. The missus likes it.”
“Hello, Captain Basil,” said a husky voice.
“Oh, hello, my dear. Aren’t you looking lovely tonight? I shall join you in a moment.”
“Don’t keep me waiting too long.”
“I wouldn’t dream of it,” I replied with a lascivious ogle at the lady’s neckline. “Just toasting to Fox’s good health and paying my debts.
She sauntered towards the stairs and disappeared.
“Rowena?” Fox gave a long whistle.
I shrugged and said causally, “It’s Saturday.”
“So it is,” said Fox, gazing at the crowded room. “And a man, when he’s far from home, often wants a bit of company on a Saturday night. And you, sir, if I may take a liberty, have chosen your company very well.” He raised his glass. “To our wives and our sweethearts.”
I raised my glass. “May they never meet!”
He laughed, I laughed, and we threw back our drinks.
I settled my bill, grinned at Fox’s mock salute and ‘Aye, aye, Captain!’ and headed for the stairs.
I surreptitiously passed coinage to Rowena as we moved together down the dark, drab hall. The sounds of muffled pleasure mingled with the noise from the ground floor.
“Thank you, my dear. Your information and assistance were invaluable.”
“It’s a pleasure doing business with you, Captain” She brought me to the last door.
We both looked up and down the corridor, and when it was clear, she opened the door.
“Enjoy your evening.”
I entered. She did not. The door closed.
“Watson!”
He was in my arms before I could say more.
“I couldn’t wait!” He kissed me hard. “Are you cross?”
“Are you mad? I’m delighted.” I kissed him back. “I was going to be on the swiftest vessel possible back to you in the morning, but this is much better.”
“I’m glad you think so.” He grinned a wicked grin and untied my neckerchief. “I fancy being a sweetheart, not a wife tonight.”
“Oh, pity,” I teased, starting in one his buttons, “I paid for a tart.”
“That can be managed, too, Captain.”
