Title: Our Vision
Form/Wordcount: 500
Character/Parings: Mycroft Holmes, Holmes father, OFC
Rating: PG
Summary: Mycroft didn’t understand but knew his omega father made a mistake.
Warning/Content: AU, non-sexual A/B/O, mpreg, eugenics
Author’s note: I’m choosing “happy” topics again. I’ve been thinking about writing an A/B/O fic to play with creating different societal norms and inequality within that society. I’ve also been reading about the history of genetics and how Mendelism and Darwinism were used to justify eugenics in the early 1900’s. This is mostly a writing doodle that wouldn’t leave me alone.
Mycroft was too young and an alpha and didn’t understand the Omega Primes intervening. But, he knew his omega father made a mistake.
A cough had woken him, and he wanted the comfort of his omega father. His groggy and stumbling exploration led him outside the room where he heard voices. The warm voice of his father was cut short by a sharp cold voice. He inched closer and peered through the crack. His eyes went wide when he saw the vibrant blue cloaks of Omega Prime spilling around the floor of her chair.
His father stood head bowed when he spoke. “My alpha wanted-“
“What your alpha wanted is of no concern to us.”
“I’m having another child at the citadel's pleading. I registered the pregnancy. I-“
“Did not keep your mission!” The Omega Prime reprimanded. Mycroft’s knees almost buckled at the power of her voice. She smoothed her cloak before starting again in a much softer tone. “You were to have an omega daughter. Our citadel has kept careful watch over your bloodline. This union was another step in our vision of perfection. The raw power, the genetics, the offspring potential, the intelligence were all here and you’ve squandered it away. You are an omega male ill-suited for birthing. How many more children do you think you can have?”
His father touched his belly and ignored the question. “There are others.”
“You know that we are all needed for our purpose. We are one.”
His father echoed back, “We are one.”
“We have been bred for a purpose apart from the socially degenerate or defective. You represent the next step towards perfection; a light for those to follow. Remember your place. My orders were to tell you to have the pup. When they are of age your alpha offspring will be matched with suitable mates.”
Mycroft stepped silently back. He ignored the mate comment and focused on a sibling. A sibling? Another alpha? He had been an only child for six years. He thought his father couldn’t have another child. He tipped toed down the hall, keeping his breath even and himself calm to not alert his father.
He laid in bed grew more upset. He heard his door open and he immediately closed his eyes and slowed his breath. His father sat on the side of his bed and gently laid a hand on his shoulder.
“I know you are awake, dear. Why were you out of bed?”
“I.. I couldn’t go back to sleep. I don’t like her” Mycroft mumbles into his pillow. His father gently squeezed his shoulder and Mycroft sat up flinging his arms around his father. He sensed the tension in is father. “Why was she here? She was angry. Why does she want to take me away?”
He gave a sad smile. “It’ll be fine. You’ll see.” His father began to hum, and Mycroft started to feel drowsy. “Now sleep.”
Mycroft nuzzled into the familiar scent of his father and fell asleep.

Date: 2020-01-19 06:07 pm (UTC)I'm always kind of fascinated when writers look at omega 'verse through a social and political eye. It's a world that is very complicated in terms of sex and gender but also a world where people are expected to conform to narrowly specific roles, simply depending on what their bodies are like. It's interesting to see writers explore a reflection of our own reality.
It's intriguing here in your fic that the omegas seem to have the power. Or through attempting to stand up to the alphas, the omega leaders have become despots themselves. "Our citadel has kept careful watch over your bloodline. This union was another step in our vision of perfection." It's an unsettling worldview ^^"

Date: 2020-01-21 05:19 am (UTC)Agreed. That world building and thought behind it are intriguing to me and it’s often neat to see how a character struggles against it. When the fic goes there, it’s a lot like reading a dystopian story. I’ve recently read The Giver and A Brave New World, and it was interesting to see what part of society they chose to exaggerate or change. So it’s been interesting imaging a society with different social norms and so forth.
I’ve yet to read an ABO that has omegas in positions of power. What would happen if a subset of omegas were a powerful political force with their own agenda and desire for power? If alphas were more common than omegas, it sets them up in a position to be selective in their breeding. If I was to continue this further, I would develop the matriarchal (omegarchal) system a bit better. There are some examples of that type of society in the past.
From a biological perspective, there are lots of examples of female producing chemicals and their effect on males. Female birds are extremely selective of their mates. So, making making omegas choosy and alphas subservient by use of pheromones isn’t too far out there. Biology is super strange.
Part of the inspiration for that is from Dune. There is a cast of women (Bene Gesserit) who are the underlying political power and force in the book. They are trying to breed the next powerful being and take control of him. So what if I took that idea and applied it to the Holmes brothers? The dark history of genetics fits easily fits into that breeding idea. I was reading through eugenic material and it was disturbing on many levels.
Anyway, there’s the way too much info above and thanks for spending time reading it.
