A Reason to Smile
From the depths of his criminal mastermind lair,
Moriarty perceived something strange in the air;
So he sprang from his criminal mastermind bed,
A spider’s web hanging quite low overhead,
And strode past a stunningly evil display
Of criminal trophies, to greet the new day.

He opened a triple-locked window to see
What the cause of his sudden excitement might be.
He wasn’t the type to emerge in the morning;
He hated the thought of a bright sunrise dawning,
He hated the summer, he hated the spring,
The birth of new life, and the way bluebirds sing.

The street noise was muffled, the bird life was still.
The alleys were shrouded by mist, in between
A man of ill purpose could wander unseen,
And clothing was layered up for warmth, any face

As he sipped an incredibly bitter black tea,
And gazed at his almanac, sinisterly,
And flipped through the pages; October at last!
The seasons most hated were long in the past.
It was time for the grim and unclean and reviled;
He put on the darkest of cloaks, and he smiled...
