Warning/Content: Just another week for Dr Watson
It began with the changeable weather. Dr Watson had left to visit his patients wearing his overcoat, and by the time he returned, the late spring day was much warmer, and the doctor was feeling rather heated. Consequently, he had gone out in the afternoon without his coat and been caught in a sudden heavy downpour.
The following day he had run some errands and then caught the omnibus back to Baker Street. The omnibus was rather stuffy, and Dr Watson was suffering from a couple of broken nights, and so he fell asleep, waking only when the bus conductor called out, “We are at the terminus. All change, please!” Dr Watson had descended from the omnibus, feeling slightly confused, but fortunately he was recognised by a police constable, who called him a cab.
The next day the fever took hold. Although the doctor had recovered from his time in Afghanistan and the journey home, it had left him susceptible to fever. He spoke alternately of being too hot and too cold, and Mrs Hudson was forced to change the sheets as the fever reached its pitch.
The day after, Watson woke to find Holmes in his room apparently packing a bag. Although the doctor felt a little better, he knew he was in no condition to follow Holmes on a case. Spotting Watson awake, Holmes simply smiled and said what the doctor needed was a change of air and that he had arranged for them to spend a few days in the countryside.
The last day saw Holmes and Watson in a comfortable cottage in Sussex. Watson was reclining in a large armchair, a rug draped over his knees. Holmes was playing his violin whilst Watson beat time with his hand. Slowly the doctor’s eyes closed, and his hand fell still, and softly Holmes changed key and began to play a lullaby, as he watched the steady rise and fall of his friend’s chest.

Date: 2019-04-16 11:19 pm (UTC)I particularly like that ending phrase softly Holmes changed key and began to play a lullaby, as he watched the steady rise and fall of his friend’s chest. Holmes watching the 'steady rise and fall' of Watson's chest speaks of Holmes' affection and also reads as a subtle reassurance that Watson is on the mend and getting stronger.
