The little widow came into the room and stopped just a few feet inside. She looked at her favorite tenants through green eyes narrowing with suspicion. “Just what mischief are you two up to now?” she demanded. Then, in a weary voice, she added, “Do I even want to know?”
The taller of the two sprinkled catnip into his pipe and lit it. Taking a puff, he asked idly, “Who says we have to be up to mischief, Missus Hudson?”
“Oh, you don’t fool me for one moment, Sherlock! I see the way the tip of your tail is twitching!” she exclaimed, her own, puffy tail curling docilely around her left leg. “You two toms are always up to something, and that tail of yours is just proof that I’m right!” She huffed.
“Now, Missus Hudson, that’s hardly fair,” John commented, spreading his furry hands went in the air between them. “We can hardly be accused of hunting mischief. Is it Sherlock’s fault that it finds us so often? We don’t leave here looking for it!”
“No! You invite it to come to you! You have all sorts of callers all times of the day and night!”
“Not all sorts,” he argued. “It’s rare that you see a young, unmarried queen or a kitten around these parts!”
“Rare indeed,” she hissed, “but that hardly excuses the type of clients you do invite or the fact that you are always up to mischief!”
“My dear woman,” Sherlock said, beginning to purr, “how would you suggest we find the crimes that need solving without inviting mischief into our lives? We may always have some sort of mischief to deal with -- that’s true enough --, but it’s the only way we can find the people who truly need my help.”
She hushed, pressing her furry lips together, but her tail continued to swish with agitation. “It could be far worse,” Sherlock continued wisely. “We could be having a different unmarried queen every night, or perhaps a tom might be more to John’s liking.”
“Sherlock!”
“Sometimes they are to mine,” Sherlock continued, his tail beginning to swish idly as though he’d not heard John’s indignant comment. “Or we could have drug dealers here or bobbies in and out every moment of the day and night.”
“Really, Sherlock -- “ Now it was Missus Hudson’s turn to sound indignant.
“At least we are solving crimes, Missus Hudson, and not committing them! One would think you’d be glad to have such upstanding tenants as us and to know that you need never fear a crime being committed here!”
“Really, Sherlock!” Missus Hudson cried again, sighing as Sherlock finally finished his tirade. “Very well.” She sniffed and waved a hand at them dismissively. “At least try not to explode the flat this time, or get yourselves shot.” She added the last in a whisper as she turned and left.
“What?” Sherlock asked, watching John shake his head.
“You just talked yourself, and me by association, out of tea.” He sighed.
