Warning/Content: Mrs Hudson is sewing curtains
Mrs Hudson hummed as she sewed. Really, there was something very relaxing about hemming curtains. Especially curtains for her lodgers.
She fingered the material as she went along. It was good quality, and worth every penny she would be charging; there was no need to say it had been an end of roll, for which she’d paid less than half price. Then there was the lining, she’d checked how much it would have cost her to buy new lining material, although no-one would notice she’d reused some she’d already got. It wasn’t as if anyone would spot the slight fading at the sides; there was no guarantee it would be allowed to last until the summer.
She continued to sew as she did the sums in her head: curtain material, lining, thread (she’d bought a new reel, it was always worth buying the strongest), plus one, no, better make it two, bottles of gin for the inconvenience, add a little to make it a nice round figure, and that gave her a suitable amount to add to the next month’s rent.
She finished the first curtain and laid it to one side. Then she picked up the second curtain and started on the hem. There were those who found hemming curtains tedious, for her the chore was relaxing and never boring.
