Doctor Watson cracked his newspaper slightly and peeked over its top. He kept expecting Holmes to start in about a case and attempt to drag him out into the merciless snow that seemed to be never ending this year, but the world’s most famous detective was still quietly puffing on his pipe and gazing thoughtly into the hearth. The fire burning therein kept them warm and cozy, and Watson would not have disturbed the peace in that moment for anything.

“Watson -- “

The good doctor ducked behind his newspaper and closed his eyes, forcing down his own irritation that threatened to explode from deep within him. “Holmes,” he began, “there’s not a thing even you could be thinking of that couldn’t wait another night.”

“No,” he agreed. “I was just thinking, however, that a spot of tea and some of those cookies Mrs. Hudson brought us might be nice.”

Watson peeked up over the top of his newspaper again. “Is that all?” he asked.

“Quite.” Sherlock smiled at him, his smile warm as the fire and far more innocent than he ever was. Still on guard, Watson put down his newspaper and started bustling around their small kitchen, pouring the last of their tea, starting a new pot, and bringing out the cookies Mrs. Hudson had brought up earlier. “I was, however, thinking that perhaps we could venture out tomorrow.”

“Holmes -- “ His name left Watson’s mouth, just underneath his bristling mustache, in a growled protest.

Yet Sherlock was still smiling at him. “The snow is supposed to stop tomorrow, and I was thinking it might be nice to venture out for a bit.”

“Who says the snow will stop tomorrow? The weatherman certainly haven’t made any such prediction!” He had read that part of the newspaper very carefully indeed.

“No, but it can not last forever, Watson. Besides, it’s mere elementary, my dear friend. Neither the wind nor the speed with which the snowflakes are currently falling have increased in the last twenty four hours. They have instead began to decrease. It’s only marginal so far, of course, and I wouldn’t expect you to have noticed -- “

“But you have,” Watson remarked, bringing a tray with both cookies and tea back to their spot by the fire.

“Yes.” Holmes’ smile turned smug as he looked superiorly up at him. “I have.”

“Well, regardless of what the weatherman say,” Watson returned, sitting the tray down between them, “if Sherlock Holmes says the neverending blizzard is coming to a stop, it must be so.”

“Of course it is.”

Watson chuckled. “I’ll make you a deal, Sherlock. If the snow stops tonight or tomorrow, we can venture out after it does, but if it doesn’t, we stay inside here by the fire where it’s nice and warm -- “

“And safe?” Holmes concluded knowingly for him. “Very well, Watson. It’s a deal.”

Watson smiled into his cup. Then the snow was stopping, but he’d first enjoy another quiet night inside by the fire and his dearest friend.
