“Mrs Hudson,” Esme called out, “There’s something strange in the broom cupboard.”
“Just use the carpet beater, dear, it normally works.”
“No, not that sort of strange. There are a number of dresses hanging up on a temporary rail.”
“Let me see!”
Mrs Hudson peered into the cupboard. “Hmm, it looks like one of those changing rooms you get in the posh shops. You know, where you try on several dresses and decide which ones you’re going to make in a cheaper fabric.”
“Why would Mr Holmes be trying on dresses in the broom cupboard?” Esme asked. “Surely he could use his own room.”
“Hold one of them up for me.”
Esme did as instructed.
“I’m not convinced they are for Mr Holmes. Look at the chest size.”
“That’s true. He does seem to prefer something for a fuller figure.”
“It’s too long for the doctor, or Inspector Lestrade. No, they must be for young Inspector Hopkins. And he’d want the privacy to get changed.”
“I don’t think much of the selection.”
“No, those two wouldn’t suit his colouring at all.”
“And look at the frills on that one. He’d fall over it before he got down the stairs.”
“The black is too sombre.”
“So it’s the electric blue one then.”
“Yes, we’ll put a label on it.”

When Sherlock Holmes opened the broom cupboard door to show Hopkins his options, they found the blue dress at the front of the rail with a neatly printed notice saying: “Wear this one!”
