A little later Mrs Hudson reappeared. "I am terribly sorry, gentlemen, but there will be no apple pie tonight. On reflection I realised it could not have been Inspector Hopkins who left the footprints. So, as apology, I gave him the apple pie I had made for your supper."
I was completely thunderstruck. So I asked hopefully, "Could you make another?"
"Unfortunately I have to clean up the footprints, so do not have time." Mrs Hudson waved the brush and dustpan in evidence.
"Holmes," I said, "it is very good of you to volunteer to sweep up."
