Find his book. Find his book and get out of this ugly house.
Stay calm. Stay cold. Do not think of the vile entries in that book, of the women he’s used and murdered. It is only evidence, the one thing that can possibly shock Violet de Merville out of her infatuation with the man.
The Baron and my friend move away from his office. Now.
Ignore the horrible headache and the slight dizziness you haven’t told Watson about. A woman’s life is in the balance. You can faint when you have the book.
Stay cool. Stay calm. Stay collected.

Chinese pottery isn’t the only thing on display in this grand house. Books fill shelves and cases. Paintings and watercolours and pencil sketches cover the walls. As I walk through the hall, I pass some weapons and armour in one room.
Everything I see is beautiful, clearly expensive or even priceless. And the only thing it all does is make me angrier.
I think of the women ruined by this man, one after the other, lives destroyed if not outright taken.
That book we seek is his display case, and female reputations are just one more priceless thing he’s collected.

Prison. Bad enough, I suppose, but I’ve lived in worse places. Matron’s a bully but she knows there’s someone important involved with my case so she leaves me alone, and so do most of the others in here with me.
Besides, it’s only a few months. When I’m out, Porky and me’ll disappear into this wretched city.
But I stopped him, stopped him better and faster than Mr. Sherlock Holmes could. Law might not touch the bastard, but now that his outside finally matches the inside no respectable woman will either.
That’s a nice little piece of revenge I’ve collected.
