The prompt for this month is:


Fireworks


Feel free to interpret that metaphorically or literally.

As you probably already know, in Britain we celebrate Bonfire Night on 5th November. It commemorates the Houses of Parliament not getting blown up in 1605. The 5th is also known as Firework Night, Guy Fawkes Day and Guy Fawkes Night—Guy Fawkes being one of the Gunpowder Plot’s conspirators. If you wish, you can learn more about the history of the celebrations here on Wikipedia.

Bonfire Night has naturally altered over the centuries, and so this article on The Victorianist blog might be of interest too. It covers descriptions from The Times of Bonfire Night in 1886, 1887 and 1888.


I would just like to mention the October Activity here as well. There were some wonderfully imaginative contributions and my co-mod and I would like to thank everyone who took part. In particular we’d like to gratefully acknowledge saki101’s enthusiasm and excellent additions to the general insanity.

It may or may not please the mod to know that I carry a Preferred Pyro [as in pyromaniac] card which entitles me to generous discounts at a chain of fireworks stores two states away, where they are legal year-round.

Do you know, I can't see the new 'like' button (unless I'm logged out) because I'm using the old version of LJ. But I got an email simply titled: Someone likes your entry. I just think, without an exclamation mark at the end, that is such an unnerving statement ^__^ Very Halloween-ish ^^

Neat! In the United States some of the southern states observe Christmas Day with fireworks, too.

Yeah, they are legal year-round in Tennessee and if I drive from my home to Mississippi (where my aunt lives) I pass through a corner of that state. I fill up the car and then shoot them off in Mississippi for whatever holiday I am visiting for . In South Carolina, they are legal year-round also and growing up we used to shoot them for every occasion (birthdays and Christmas, not just New Year and Fourth of July). I get $25 off when I spend $150 (which I have been known to do) I have a whole system for my 'show', sparklers for everyone to hold, small ones, medium ones and then a pre-finale and a finale, which is a big mother-fucking box of rainbow-coloured TNT.

Yeah, the 'like' is new, right? That was me, in case you're wondering. SOMEONE likes you. We don't know who. Maybe Jesus. Maybe the postman. WE DON'T KNOW!

How interesting ^_^ That feels so odd to me, as a British person. Beginning of the New Year, yes; Christmas, no. Actually, it's this very point that made Small Hobbit suggest I mention why the November prompt is fireworks. Because we all use fireworks to celebrate at different times.

We did actually manage to stagger to a conclusion. When last seen, Mrs. Hudson was in a pond and returned to her true form. Probably shortly after that the yelling started ^^"
