Form/Word Count: 200
Characters/Pairing: Dr Watson, Sherlock Holmes, Stanley Hopkins, Annie the maid
Rating: G
Warning/Content: Holmes is puzzled
Inspector Hopkins had come to consult on a case. He and Holmes had visited the scene of the crime and were now discussing a point that was somewhat confusing.
At that moment, Annie knocked and entered when I called out. Hopkins smiled at her and then blushed. They are now engaged, but it doesn’t seem to have prevented the inspector’s change of colour whenever he encounters our housemaid unexpectedly.
Holmes continued with his thoughts, being uninterested in the regular occurrence, since he is not, now, writing a monograph on shades of red. “We should have been able to find the key,” he was saying. “And I still don’t understand what the marks on the floor beside the cabinet were. It was as if someone had started to sweep but then stopped, but there would be no reason for that.”
Annie smiled. “Perhaps, Mr Holmes, the person concerned was using a broom to search underneath the cabinet for the key. That would leave marks, but once they had found it, they wouldn’t continue to sweep.”
Hopkins gave Annie a wide smile and Holmes gave her a brief nod of acknowledgement. I laughed as common sense once again defeated the detective mind.
