Title: The Family Herald
Wordcount: 100
Characters/Pairings: Holmes/Watson
Rating: G
Warnings/Content: a lonely pre-LAST breakfast
Author's Notes: wandering back into writing after (mumbles number) years, so glad to have prompts now and then--thanks all!
Even before cracked, I knew the eggs were once again hard-boiled.
In honesty, my palate was not so discriminatory to mind; decades had done little to elide the memory of a soldier's rations.
That aside, I hadn't heart to correct our cook. There will be dark enough days. Why begrudge stories of romance, the dubious advice to new lovers?
I looked to the empty chair. A year with no word felt a century. Yet in this, too, I had endured worse.
Lancing out chalky yolk, I scanned the paper like an oracle, summoning the sole direction I had: Chicago. Chicago.
