As I came up the stairs to our rooms, I heard the unmistakable voice of Mrs Hudson berating Holmes.  This was followed by the sound of a window being thrown open, Holmes pleading that his experiment be left alone, and what I suspected was said experiment being ejected through the open window.  Tactfully I waited while Mrs Hudson descended the stairs and return to her own rooms.  It also allowed whatever smell had presumably aroused her ire to disperse a little.

As soon as I entered our rooms, Holmes moaned, “I had used all the substance I had acquired for that experiment and now there is none left for me to try to repeat the process.”

“Well,” I replied, “that comes of keeping all your rotten eggs in one basket!”

The final statement is an adage for our times! Poor Mrs. Hudson.
