Watson is still vulnerable like a child, having to learn this major new life skill of navigating without his sight. But even though Holmes feels responsible for Watson's safety, he knows the only way Watson is going to regain his independence is if he stands back a little. There is a kind of courage in not trying to intervene, even though Holmes is horribly aware of every minor injury and is probably always worrying about what might happen too. The story shows Holmes' great respect for Watson, as well as his love.
