I had actually read Smee, maybe about 25 years ago. And I found it online and reread it. I'd forgotten bits of it but the basic concept and certain sections had always stayed with me. It definitely captures an unsettling atmosphere very, very well.
I love your interpretation - Watson thinking it's Holmes who is 'Smee' is such a good idea. And the ghost's appearance was such an inspired use of the prompt ^^"
