Title: Love Between the Stacks
Rating: Teen
Pairing: that rarest of rare ships: Lestrade/Lomax the sublibrarian of "The Illustrious Client."
Length: 500
Summary: A first smooch beneath the London Library in St. James's Square.
Author's Note: for the monthly prompt: ask a stupid question.
“Thank you so much for your help, Mister Lomax.”
“Not at all, Inspector. I believe I shall have to show you the way back. This portion of the library’s holdings is as solemn as catacombs and as puzzling to the uninitiated as a labyrinth.”
“Mister Lomax, before I leave, may I ask you a stupid question?”
“Of course, but I must advise you there are no stupid questions in my line of work.”
“Much like mine in that respect, I suppose,” said Lestrade after a pause of consideration.
“Indeed. I think there are quite few parallels. Most of my work is tiresome and tedious, but it is all very necessary drudgery. Without it, there would not be the glorious moments, such as this one, when I contribute to justice and truth and knowledge.”
“That you have done. But getting back to my question, when this case is resolved, would you consider joining me for a meal or a pint or a cup of tea? Your choice, whatever you prefer. And my invitation, naturally, as a token of gratitude for your assistance.”
Lomax blushed. “What if I were quite shameless and said, ‘yes and yes and yes’?”
Lestrade smiled. “Then I would consider myself very lucky, indeed, to be thrice blessed with your company.” Lestrade’s eyes fell to Lomax’s lips, then he stopped and looked anxiously about them.
“Believe me, Inspector, we are in the bowels of the beast. If anyone were approaching, we could hear them for miles.”
Lestrade nodded, then he leaned closer.
Lomax placed a hand on his arm, which Lestrade immediately interpreted as a halting one. Lestrade’s face went ashen.
“I’m very sorry, Mister Lomax, if misinterpreted…”
“May I ask a stupid question, Inspector? Or rather, make a stupid request?”
“I can’t imagine you asking or requesting anything stupid, Mister Lomax.”
Lomax waved. “Might we move three rows over?”
Lestrade frowned. “If you wish, but why?”
Lomax’s cheeks went from pink to scarlet. “That’s the spot, of the whole library, that I enjoy most. The volumes there are the dearest to me.”
Lestrade’s lips twisted in a smile. “You want me to kiss you in front of your favourite books?”
Lomax’s eyes widened, and he nodded.
Lestrade chuckled. “By all means. Lead on.”
Lomax did.
And no sooner were the two slotted between a pair of shelves heavy from floor to ceiling with stolid-looking tomes than Lestrade took Lomax in his arms and kissed him soundly.
Lomax melted against Lestrade, pushing up on his toes and wrapping his arms around Lestrade’s neck. Lestrade, for his part, pulled Lomax snugly to his chest and held him there.
Eventually, Lestrade broke away. “And now I really must leave you. The quicker this business is settled, the quicker we can celebrate.”
Lomax nodded, but before he removed himself, he asked in a husky voice,
“One last stupid question.”
“Hmm?” Lestrade nuzzled his cheek.
“One more kiss before you go?”
“Not stupid at all,” murmured Lestrade as he tightened his embrace.
