Warning/Content: Concerning the sweet inspector's handkerchiefs
“Here, let me look at that,” Dr Watson said.
Inspector Stanley Hopkins held out his hand. He had wrapped his pocket handkerchief around it to stop the bleeding. Watson carefully removed the handkerchief and washed the wound.
“It looks clean enough, and it’s not very deep. I’ll bandage it up for you, but you’ll be able to remove the bandage again tomorrow.”
“Thank you, Doctor,” Hopkins said. “That’s very good of you.”
“Not a problem at all.” Watson was about to hand the handkerchief back when he noticed something next to the initials. “How strange, there’s a tiny heart sewn after the ‘H’.”
Hopkins fumbled in his trouser pocket and produced a second handkerchief. “That’s odd. There’s a heart here too.”
“Hmm,” Watson said. “Oh well. Would you like some tea?”
“Thank you. I’d appreciate that.”
Later, after the Inspector had left, (having thanked Mrs Hudson for her excellent jam tarts on his way out), Watson went to peer inside the mousehole at one end of the mantlepiece. A pair of bright black eyes looked back at him. Mouselet sat there, needle in one paw, a man’s handkerchief in the other.
“I thought it must be you,” Watson said.
“Do you think my sweet inspector minds?” Mouselet asked.
Watson smiled. “No, I don’t think he does. He’ll put it down to one more strange happening at 221B. Oh, and speaking of strange happenings, what was that clink, clank, thud we heard when we were drinking our tea?”
“That was the Ferret. He wanted to try out his ghost outfit, with a chain, but couldn’t wait for Aemelia to finish sewing up the hem, so he fell over it.”
Watson nodded. It all made perfect sense.
