“In the name of all that is wonderful, I’m grateful to you two!” said Inspector MacDonald as he led the handcuffed villain away.
“It was our pleasure, Mister Mac,” replied Holmes. He glanced at Watson, who was still setting himself to rights.
“Holmes, I say,” muttered Watson under his breath, “I haven’t used that tackle since my rugby days.”
“But it’s still quite effective, my dear Watson. And, as always, we made a good team, even here in Mister Mac’s own backyard of Aberdeen. I flushed the criminal out—not unlike I did in my younger days with ducks in the fens—and followed like the good hound that I am.”
“And I pop up, just when the fellow thinks that he’s given the slip to the world’s greatest detective and a distinguished officer of Scotland Yard. Though how you knew that he was going to choose that market stall by which to make his escape, I’m sure I don’t know.”
“How ‘bout I explain my reasoning over a couple of pints at the pub?”
“Excellent. I just can’t see it. He shouldn’t have chosen a stall of tartan fabrics.”
“No?”
“Not if he wanted to get off Scot free!”
