Sherlock was stripped to her petticoat, and was hanging out of a window panting.

Joanna paused on the threshold, then stepped into the living room and closed the door behind her.

“You might want to put some clothes on, dear. Inspector Hopkins said he would be along directly.”

She threw her coat onto a chair.

“The boy’s already smitten. If he sees you in this state there’s likely to be some kind of explosion.”

“I’m the one who’s going to explode!”

Sherlock pulled her head in and turned around. She was red in the face.

“When Hopkins arrives you’ll just have to tell him to leave again. I can’t see anyone like this!”

She fanned herself frantically with a hand.

“I don’t know what on earth I’ve come down with. It’s been weeks now! One minute I’m perfectly fine and the next I’m boiling hot!”

“Yes…”

Joanna hesitated, and began to approach her friend cautiously.

“Sherlock, I’ve been meaning to bring this up… Well, I’d hoped you might have worked it out yourself, being a detective and all!”

She laughed somewhat nervously.

“The thing is… I think you may be going through the, um, Change of Life.”

“Change of—?”

The hand being used as a fan froze. When Sherlock eventually spoke her voice was very small indeed.

“But I’m Sherlock Holmes.”

Joanna crossed swiftly to her, and took her hand in both of hers. “It happens to us all, old girl, if we’re lucky enough to make it this far.”

“I suppose so, but…” Sherlock looked stricken. “I never truly believed I’d get old.”

“Oh, come now!”

Joanna gave her a tentative smile.

“You must try not to think of it in that way. I mean, I’m still the same person, eh?”

Sherlock gave her a small smile in return. “Yes. Yes, of course you are.”

“It’ll all be all right. You just wait and see.” Joanna squeezed Sherlock’s hand and let it go. “Now hurry up and get your frock on. There’s a case for the great Sherlock Holmes to solve!”

“Actually I think rational dress might be more suitable for this particular investigation.”

Sherlock headed towards her bedroom. At the door she paused and turned to look back at Joanna.

“You know, I suppose my situation isn’t all bad...”

A mischievous smile began to appear.

“I might get facial hair like you. It would be most useful for disguises.”

Joanna narrowed her eyes. “Sherlock…”

Sherlock giggled. “Don’t take on so, dear girl. It’s only a modest little moustache!”

Joanna gave her a mock glare. “Oh, go and… put your bloomers on!”

She shook her head as her friend disappeared into her bedroom.

“Sherlock, my dear, don’t ever change.”
