“I know you don’t have much in the way of family or of the holiday spirit for that matter -- “
Watson’s mustache twitched as Holmes interrupted him. “Nonsense, Watson. I have brothers and plenty of holiday spirit. I simply do not have any tolerance for the commercialization of what started as a religious holiday. The true spirit of the occasion has been lost, and you know very well where I stand on people who expect something for nothing.”
“I do, but . . . Holmes? Did you say you have brothers, old chap?”
“Why of course I did.” Holmes’ eyes met Watson’s. “You are like a brother to me, a far dearer brother than my own blood brother after all. You know very well how dysfunctional my relationship with Mycroft is.”
Watson’s face lit up. “It’s settled then,” he said firmly. “Come along. Let’s get your things packed. You’re spending the holidays with us.”
“Was there ever any doubt?” Holmes asked, smiling. He tapped his bed with his cane. “And I do believe you will find I’m already perfectly ready. Stop fretting so, old boy. Our youth is far behind us. We must enjoy what time we have left.”
It pained him, but Watson knew Holmes was right. They had lived far longer than anyone in their sort of professions should; one day, their time would come to an end. He was still smiling, however, for he knew that as long as he had Holmes by his side, he would truly enjoy whatever time they did have left, rather it was Christmas, the New Year, or just an ordinary day in, or out, of the office -- not that any day was ever ordinary with Sherlock Holmes by his side. Watson chuckled and retrieved his best friend’s suitcases out from underneath his bed.
