Ruby stopped talking. Her hands froze mid-way to placing emptied glasses into her tray. “What’s wrong?” Gus asked, glancing around them. She could tell it was his panicky gaze, the one he used to use with whiskers twitching to determine rather or not he needed to hide from prey. She tried to voice an answer. She wanted to reassure him. But the words died in her throat.

Instead she gathered the dishes, beat a hasty retreat to the kitchen behind the bar, and called urgently out for her grandmother. “Granny!”

Her grandmother stuck her head in from the main part of the diner. Ruby had just ran pass her without even seeing her. Her eyes now were wild and flashing back and forth between yellow and green. “What is it, Ruby?”

“Did you see who just walked in?!” she demanded, her voice raising a pitch in her panic.

“Yes, so?”

“So? So?! I know we’re trying to keep the magic and everything a secret, but he’s going to figure it out!”

“So?” her grandmother asked again patiently.

“So do you know who that is?!”

“Of course I do. He’s Sherlock Holmes.”

Ruby stared at her. “Yes!”

“Our secrets are safe with him.”

“Granny, he’s only the most genius detective ever!”

Her grandmother’s smile was patient, if thinned. “You misunderstand me, my dear girl. I said our secrets are safe with him, not from him. He’s one of us.”

Ruby couldn’t seem to stop staring at her. “What?”

“He’s one of us,” her grandmother repeated again, calmly. “He must have come to this new land with the rest of us. I just don’t know why he’s only chosen to appear now.”

“You’re sure?” Ruby swallowed uncomfortably.

“Quite certain.” Her grandmother smiled again. “We used to date.”

“What?!”

“He tried quite hard to court me, but your grandfather won my hand.”

All Ruby could do was stare. Her grandmother, still smiling, returned to the diner to greet her old beau. “My dear Mister Holmes,” she greeted him, “you have managed the impossible yet again.”

“However so, milady?”

Her grinned widened. “You just gobsmacked, as you would say, my granddaughter. She can’t believe we know each other.”

Holmes took Granny’s hand and kissed its back. “I dare say we more than know each other, and you haven’t changed a bit, my dear.”

“Neither have you!” Laughing, she withdrew her hand. “You’re still the same scoundrel you’ve always been! What brings you to my diner after all this time?”

“A case, I’m afraid.”

Granny sighed. “Yes,” she said, dismayed, her own tail tucking beneath the bustle of her skirts, “you haven’t changed a bit.” Already she remembered why Ruby’s grandfather had won. With Holmes, work always came first, and a wolf had to have a little fun. Well, maybe she could still manage to have at least a little fun this night. Despite what her granddaughter thought, she was only old; her hormones, and she herself, were far from dead!
